Genki Sushi

Today Jenn, my parents, and I went to this place for dinner. It's a small restaurant adjacent to the Golden Bear Inn. On the outside, it just looks like a little run-down hotel restaurant, but inside was bustling and all the tables were full! After a 15 minute wait, we were finally seated. The waitress was clearly very busy because she was very terse with us when she took our order, but still polite. Jenn and I shared the sashimi-gyoza combination dinner, grilled eggplant with miso paste, a spider roll, and a "full moon" consisting of hamachi, tuna, tobiko, and quail eggs. The sashimi-gyoza combination dinner wasn't bad. It came with 4 gyozas, 2 pieces of hamachi, and what looked like 4 pieces of tuna, and some pickled pickles, and deep-fried potato cakes (croquettes?). The eggplant was soft and mushy and the miso paste added an aromatic flavoring that complemented the eggplant. The spider roll had excellent soft-shell crab and the top was smothered with fish roe. The "full moon" was the special one. The rice was wrapped with the two pieces of fish (hamachi and tuna), topped with tobiko and a quail egg yolk. The egg yolk made everything very smooth and tasted... well, eggy. But in a good way. It was pretty pricey, for something about 1.5"x1"x1". It cost $8 for two of them, and is definitely worth trying but really too expensive.

The service at this place wasn't bad. Despite repeated requests for more tea and waitresses that were really really busy, when my mom realized she had asked for the wrong tofu, the waitress took it back without hesitation and didn't charge us for it. Our orders came within good time and we enjoyed a very nice meal. Don't let the outside of this restaurant deceive you; this place is good. The next time we want sushi and Sushi House is too far and Ichiban is too close, we should go here to try the "sunrise", "sunset", or "full moon."
